As a disciple of Christ, I feel it my duty to increase in the knowledge of God’s Word, written in the Holy Bible. Basically, a disciple is someone who believes and helps to spread the doctrine of another. More specifically, a disciple is one who follows the teachings of Jesus. Personally, my discipleship comes through theology. Theology is simply the study, or knowledge, of God. I find it in my purpose to be a disciple and to make disciples through theology—or the study and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Why am I a theologian?
It starts with the beginning. John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” The key is that last part. “…and the Word was God.” So, if the Word was, or is God, then to know God, you must know the Word. Likewise, in order to know the Word, you must know God.
Here are three more reasons why God has called me to be a theologian.
- “Grace and peace be multiplied to you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, According as his divine power hath given to us all things that [pertain] to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:” —2nd Peter 1:2-3
- “For this cause we also, since the day we heard [it], do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; That ye may walk worthy of the Lord to all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;” —Colossians 1:9-10
- “Of which I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfill the word of God; [Even] the mystery which hath been hid from ages, and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: To whom God would make known what [is] the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus. For which I also labor, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily.” —Colossians 1:25-29
Grace and peace are multiplied—or given in abundance—in the knowledge of Jesus Christ. It is in Him that we find the wisdom and mysteries. It is pleasing to the Lord to strive for this understanding. I do believe that the following two passages are the driving force behind my theological studies.
“That their hearts may be comforted, being knit together in love, and to all riches of the full assurance of understanding to the acknowledgment of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. And this I say, lest any man should deceive you with enticing words.” —Colossians 2:2-4
“Study to show thyself approved to God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” —2nd Timothy 2:15
There are treasures of wisdom in Christ and there will come a time (by divine appointment) when I will be expected to know how to seek these treasures. Perhaps it will be to answer a person’s questions about Jesus, perhaps it will be to teach disciples of these treasures, or perhaps I will have to stand for my faith. However it may be, knowing those treasures of wisdom which are found in Christ, will show myself approved unto God in rightly handling the word of truth.
Above all, I am a theologian for the glory of His majestic name.

Beautifully written! We are theologians ultimately for God’s glory. I love the scripture references you used. Excellent post.
