Faith in Christ is one of a Christian’s best defenses against the principalities of darkness. In order for a defense to be effectual, the defender must understand how to protect himself. An improperly implemented defense presents a great weakness for any warrior. Therefore, it is extremely helpful—critical even—to have a guide for properly implementing the faith in Christ.
Truth for All Time by John Calvin is precisely what a guide should be. The sub-title makes this clear: A Brief Outline of the Christian Faith.
What makes this book so appealing is that it was written over 450 years ago, but it is so relevant to this day. As an added bonus, it is clearly written and easy to understand (in translation). Originally written in French, it has been seamlessly translated to English. This book is suitable for readers of many different reading levels.
In this book, Calvin outlines key parts of the Christian faith. He covers things such as: knowing God, the Law, Faith, Prayer, the sacraments (i.e. baptism and communion), and order in the church among other things. I think of this book as simply a road map of the Christian walk showing you the various paths that the walk will take you. Reading this book along with your Bible will help you understand the basics of what faith in Christ can do and what you need to know to properly use it.
Calvin does a remarkable job of interpreting the scriptures to reinforce the points he makes. He weaves the Word of God into his writing. (A seasoned believer will note this quickly.) Calvin is also concise and direct in his explanations, allowing you to cover the material more quickly and effectively.
I often think that it was unfortunate that I came across this book so late in my walk with Christ. Then again, I do see that this book has shown me ways in which I need to improve my walk. With that said, I would recommend this book to be read by any believer regardless of how recent or long ago you have been walking with Christ. Anyone is sure to get something out of this nugget of wisdom.
